Suppose

...there's a dog in front of you, on a rug. You say, "The dog is on the rug".

Two things

What you said is true.
The truth of what you said is related to the meanings of your words.

Had the word 'dog' in English meant, say, what the word 'cat' in fact means, then what you'd have said is that the cat is on the rug --something false, here.

Two observations about these two things

It seems we should be able to say something useful about what meaning and truth are, which would explain these facts.
It turns out this is a hard thing to do.
